Year Visited: 2014 – December

I visited Segovia, a UNESCO World Heritage City during my visit to Spain in December, 2014. I made a day trip to Segovia by using public transport from Madrid. Segovia is a compact Spanish city in the south-east of the autonomous community of Castile and León.

Segovia is famous for its historic buildings including three main landmarks: its midtown Roman aqueduct, its cathedral (one of the last ones to be built in Europe following Gothic style), and the castle, which served as one of the templates for Walt Disney’s Cinderella Castle. The city center of Segovia is inscribed in UNSECO World Heritage site since 1985.

Pictures below are from my day trip to Segovia.

Welcome to Segovia! a beautiful Manhole Cover with city’s coat of Arms.
The Aqueduct of Segovia, is one of the best-preserved elevated Roman aqueducts, believed it was built during the first century AD. The aqueduct once transported water from the Rio (River) Frio, situated in mountains 17 km (11 mi) from the city, It runs 15 km (9.3 mi) before arriving in the city.
The Aqueduct of Segovia, One of the best-preserved Roman engineering works, it was built of some 24,000 dark-colored Guadarrama granite blocks without use of mortar. You can see a Statue of Virgin on the top.
The Aqueduct of Segovia, The aboveground portion is 2,388 feet (728 meters) long and consists of some 165 arches more than 30 feet (9 metres) high.
The Aqueduct of Segovia, you can see interesting details, especially the perfection of the masonry, with no mortar or other adhesive material to keep the blocks together. Each one (weighing up to two tons) is simply placed on top of another, demonstrating the precision of Roman engineering.
A replica of the Capitoline Wolf, a symbol of the City of Rome was a gift from the City of Rome on the 2000th anniversary of the building of the aqueduct in 1974.

The Alcázar of Segovia (Segovia Fortress), a medieval castle rising out on a rocky crag above the confluence of two rivers, is one of the most distinctive castle-palaces in Spain by virtue of its shape – like the bow of a ship. The alcázar was originally built as a fortress but has served as a royal palace, a state prison, a Royal Artillery College and a military academy since then. It is currently used as a museum and a military archives building.
Walt Disney is said to have modelled Sleeping Beauty’s castle in California’s Disneyland on Segovia’s Alcázar. Rumor has it that Segovia’s Alcázar also inspired the castle in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
The exterior of the castle has a Herrerian courtyard, moat, a drawbridge and the keep.

After exploring Segovia for a day, I took a train back to Madrid. Next day made another day trip to Toledo, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You can check-out my travel stories and picture by clicking picture below.
