I visited Sighnaghi during my five plus months backpacking trip through Central and Eastern Europe. After few days of walking around Tbilisi, the capital city of Georgia, I made a day trip to Sighnaghi, a picturesque town in the heart of the wine country.
Sighnaghi is the prettiest town in the Kakheti region of Georgia. The town sits atop a bluff overlooking the Alazani Valley, which is one of Georgia’s most famous wine-producing regions. Sighnaghi was one of Georgia’s many stops along the ancient Silk Road.
The town of Sighnaghi has cobblestone streets, a well-preserved old city wall, and charming houses.A beautiful Church of St. George and its Bell tower. The City Wall is an impressive remnant of the medieval past. The wall is more than 4 KM long, has 23 towers, all of which are named after the town at the end of the road that passes through each gate. One of 23 towers of the Sighnaghi City Wall.4 KM long Sighnaghi City Wall overlooking the Alazani Valley. At the city wall of Sighnaghi. The picturesque town of Sighnaghi. The Coat of Arms of the city of Sighnaghi, also known as ‘The City of Love.’ It’s possible to get married 24 hours a day in Sighnaghi, so many Georgians come here to wed their loved ones.
Bodbe Monastery, one of the most important places in Georgia for pilgrimages: St. Nino, who brought Christianity to the country in the 4th century, is buried here.

The wine-production dates back as far as 6,000 BC. Even more, Georgians have a unique clay-jar (the qvevri) process of wine making that has even made it onto the UNESCO list for Intangible Heritage.Kakheti, being a Wine Producing region of Georgia, a trip could not be completed without visit to a local winery.
After a wonderful day trip to this beautiful region, we returned to Tbilisi before night.
