I visited KharKhorin during my two weeks backpacking trip across Mongolia. After spending few days in UlaanBaatar, the capital city, we took a public bus for KharKhorin to experience the Naadam Festival in the Mongolian countryside. Check out some amazing photos from two wonderful days at the Naadam Festival,
KharKhorin is a town and district center near ruins of KaraKorum, the ancient capital of Mongolia. Another KharKhorin landmark is the Erdene Zuu monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The Erdene Zuu Monastery is probably the earliest surviving Buddhist monastery in Mongolia. The monastery was founded in 1586 as the first Buddhist monastery in Mongolia, after the Tibetan Buddhism was declared as the state religion of Mongolia. Stones from the nearby ruins of the ancient Mongol capital of KaraKorum were used in construction of this Monastery. At its most glorious days, the monastery housed more than 1000 monks.
In 1939, the communist leader ordered to destroy the monastery. After the fall of communism in 1990, the monastery was turned over to the monks and Erdene Zuu again became a place of worship.
Photos below are from beautiful Erdene Zuu Monastery.
