Lindau

Stories and Photos from my travels to Lindau.

Destination 》EuropeWestern Europe 》Germany 》Lindau

Years Visited: 1998 and 2011

I visited Germany multiple times between 1998 and 2011 for business trips as my ex-employer’s world headquarter is in Waldorf, 10 KM south of Heidelberg. During my first visit to Germany in 1998, I drove through Lindau, a beautiful town on Lake Constance (or Bodensee) on my way to Salzburg, Austria. In 2011, once again, I drove through this picturesque town on my to Liechtenstein.

Lindau is a city in extreme southern Bavaria on the shore of Lake Constance. It lies on the border of Austria; the nearby Austrian town of Bregenz is within walking distance. The historic town, first documented in 882, is on a 0.68-square-kilometre (0.26 sq mi) island and therefore technically called Lindau im Bodensee (Lindau in Lake Constance). The old town is full of medieval and half-timbered buildings.

Pictures below are from my visit to this picturesque town in 2011.

The Lindau harbor entrance, the landmark of the city, flanked by the Lindauer Lighthouse, the southernmost lighthouse in Germany, and the six-meter-high sculpture of the Bavarian Lion; both built in 1856.
Lindau Altes Rathaus (old townhall), Competed in 1422, the most interesting Gothic-era historic building in the town. The façade, decorated with paintings, a covered staircase leading upstairs, jagged shapes and a beautiful Renaissance door. The detail of the façade paintings is so intricate, you could stand there for hours just staring.
Mangturm, an eye-catching colorful tower, one of the landmark in Lindau, just in front of the Harbor entrance with lighthouse and Bavarian Lion. It was built on the harbor in 1100s as part of the medieval fortifications for the town of Lindau and served as a lighthouse for five centuries before being decommissioned.
Diebsturm, Lindau Thief tower, this fairy tale round tower, built around 1380, was used as a prison for a long time.
Clock Tower of Peterskirche (Saint Peters Church). The Church of St. Peter is the oldest church in Lindau which dates back to the 9th century.
After exploring the oldtown, it was time to enjoy lindauer insel weisse, a locally brewed Hefeweizen by Lindauer Inselbräu.
A mute swan, native bird on Lake Constance.

Pictures below are from my first visit to Lindau in 1998. These pictures are taken using my Point&Shoot film camera.
