Destination 》 North America 》 The Caribbean 》 Dominican Republic
Year Visited: 2005 – Sep
I visited Sosua, Dominican Republic for a business trip during September 2005. This was a short, one week trip, so I spent few evenings, after work, walking near the beach. Also, after my assignment, I visited a resort town on the Caribbean Sea near the Capital city..
The Dominican Republic is a Caribbean nation that occupies the eastern two-thirds of the Caribbean island of Hispaniola; Haiti occupies the western third of the island. The Dominican Republic is known for its beaches, resorts and golfing. The Dominican Republic is the second-largest nation in the Caribbean by area (after Cuba), and third-largest by population.
The native Taíno people had inhabited Hispaniola before the arrival of Europeans. Christopher Columbus explored and claimed the island for Spain, landing there on his first voyage in 1492. The colony of Santo Domingo became the site of the first permanent European settlement in the Americas and the first seat of Spanish colonial rule in the New World. After attaining independence in 1844 the Dominican Republic endured many years of a largely non-representative rule until Joaquin Balaguer became president in 1966 holding office until 1996. Today regular elections are held and the Dominican Republic now has an impressive and fast growing economy with tourism playing a major role.
Pictures below are from my one week stay in this beautiful country with friendly people.
I was conducting a workshop in Puerto Plata, one of the northern provinces of the Dominican Republic.

After four days of workshop, I travelled south to enjoy beach towns on the Caribbean sea.

After a week on the island, I few back to Dallas, my home at that time. Dominican Republic has more beautiful beach towns, than just two I visited. Though because of limited time, I couldn’t explore more. I would definitely like to come back and explore more.
