Year Visited: 2007 – Jun

Belize, a country located on the northeastern coast of Central America, is bordered on the northwest by Mexico, on the east by the Caribbean Sea, and on the south and west by Guatemala. Known as British Honduras until 1973, gaining its independence in 1981, Belize was the United Kingdom‘s last colony on the American mainland and still maintains strong ties with Britain. Belize is the only country in the Central America with English as its official language.

We visited Belize as a Port of Call during our seven days Caribbean cruise in Jun 2007. We spent less than 12 hours on the land and almost all the time in the Tourist resort. So yes, I visited Belize, but I haven’t seen any thing or haven’t experience local culture. Belize is home to the massive Belize Barrier Reef, dotted with hundreds of low-lying islands called cayes, also its jungle areas are home to Mayan ruins like Caracol, renowned for its towering pyramid; lagoon-side Lamanai. I would definitely like to go back and explore Belize in the future.

Two ships arrived in Belize on the same day. Population of the country increased by 20% just by day-trippers.
Haulover Creek, a coastal stream that runs through the center of Belize City and discharges into the Caribbean Sea. It is known for being the inlet of the Belize River, and separating the northern and southern areas of Belize City.
Sailboats in Haulover Creek, a coastal waterway of Belize City.
A Pelican resting in the Haulover Creek.
With so many kids in our group, most of our time was spent here on this artificial beach resort.

While Kids having fun at the Kukumba (Cucumber) beach, we adults enjoyed Belikin, a locally brewed Belizean Beer.

After less than 12 hours on the land, we went back to our cruise ship. Belize has lot to offer, though because of limited time, I couldn’t explore more. I would definitely like to come back and explore more.
