After end of our Backpacking through the Balkans Journey, my younger son Raul and I continued our journey and took a flight to Malta, a small island nation in center of the Mediterranean Sea, part of Southern Europe. While in Malta we made a day trip to Comino, the least densely populated area in the Republic of Malta, with a permanent population of only three residents, one priest and one policeman commute from the nearby island of Gozo.
Comino is a small island of the Maltese archipelago between the islands of Malta and Gozo in the Mediterranean Sea, measuring 3.5 square kilometers (1.4 sq mi) in area. Named after the cumin seed that once flourished on the Maltese island. The island is a bird sanctuary and nature reserve. Comino is the most popular for its Blue Lagoon, Complete with glorious white sand and dazzling turquoise waters, nestled in the narrow channel between Comino island and Cominotto.
Pictures below are from our day trip to this beautiful island of Comino.
Cominotto, an uninhabited island, that lies 100 meters to the north-west of Comino. The Blue Lagoon is a shallow, a narrow channel between Comino island and Cominotto. It’s basically a giant swimming pool. The water is calm, shallow, and crystal clear. It’s a good place to snorkel or just enjoy the warm water.Saint Mary’s Tower, also known as the Comino Tower, a large bastioned watchtower built in 1618, the fifth of six Wignacourt towers. The tower was used by the Armed Forces of Malta until 2002. Below the steep cliff supporting St Mary’s Tower are the sparkling blue seas of the Crystal Lagoon. Less known only because the Blue Lagoon outshines it.Comino Chapel, The Chapel of the Return from Egypt or simply St Mary’s Chapel, a Roman Catholic church, the only church located on the island of Comino. The chapel of St Mary was first mentioned in a map dating from 1296, though current structure was built in 17th century and opened for public worship in 1716.A big hole on Cominotto island, looks natural, not something caused by a cannonball. The rocky island of Comino is a bird sanctuary and nature reserve and very few people live there permanently. The peaceful landscape consists of cliffs, two small white sand beaches, coves and creeks. There are no roads or cars in Comino, only pathways where you can hike or ride a bike.During summer months many visitors, domestic and foreign, enjoy blue lagoon. Like many islands in Mediterranean Sea, Maltese islands have rocky shores and no forest on any of its islands.Young people jumping off the cliff.
Feel free to check out other places we visited in Malta during our five days stay on the island: , GoZo, Mdina and Valletta.
