Clarens

Stories and Photos from my visit to most picturesque town in South Africa.

Destination 》AfricaSouth Africa 》Clarens

Year Visited: 2018 – Feb

I visited Clarens as a part of 21 days South Africa, Lesotho and eSwatini (formerly Swaziland) overland tour in a purpose built 4×4 truck, visiting one national park to another, covering eight major national parks. On the way from the Dragon Mountains (Drakensberg National Park) to a Kingdom in the Sky (Lesotho), We stopped for lunch at a picturesque town of Clarens situated in the foothills of the Maluti Mountains. The town was established in 1912 and named after the town of Clarens in Switzerland.

Clarens is an artists’ haven with many well-known artists either living in or frequenting the town, with many art galleries scattered around the town-square. Clarens is known for its spectacular sandstone mountains and wonderful climate; it is one of the most picturesque spots in South Africa. The town is one of the safest in the country and even at night you are safe out walking although the street lights are few and far between.

The drive from Drakensberg National Park to Clarens was one the most beautiful during this trip.

After few hours in this picturesque town, we continue our journey towards Lesotho, a Kingdom in the sky, and after few days in Lesotho returned back to Graaff-Reinet, one of the oldest town in South Africa.
