Stories and Photos of the first capital of Japan

Destination 》Asia 》East Asia 》Japan 》Nara

Year Visited: 2016 – Nov

During my visit to Kyoto during the autumn of 2016, I took a train to Nara. Nara was established as a Japan’s first permanent capital in 710 CE. The city has significant temples and artwork dating to the 8th century. Eight temples, shrines, and ruins in Nara, specifically Tōdai-ji, Saidai-ji, Kōfuku-ji, Kasuga Shrine, Gangō-ji, Yakushi-ji, Tōshōdai-ji, and the Heijō Palace, collectively form the “Historic Monuments of Ancient Nara”, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Tame sika deer (spotted deer) roam through the town, especially in Nara Park. Deer are regarded as heavenly animals, protecting the city and the country.
