Day 10 at the Pamir – Wakhan ValleyFrom Tughgoz to Langar (Distance: 43 Km; Travel time 4 hours)

After visiting the Yamchun Fortress near Tughgoz, next stop was to visit Langar, a little village located at the end of Tajik Wakhan Valley.

I was fortunate this morning as I didn’t have to wait long for a paid hitch-hike, The paid hitch-hike is very common in the Wakhan Valley. You stand on a side of the road, wave when a car/SUV/truck approaches, it will stop if they can accommodate you, agree on the price and get in. This was a most fun ride with locals. The landscape was breathtaking. The locals bought a wine bottle for the road trip. The wine bottle had a very interesting label that read, not sure about alcohol content, could be 13% to 16%, also not sure about volume, could be any where between 700ml to 750ml (see the picture below).

Photos below are of amazing landscape between Tughgoz and Langar.

The Panj river is wider in this part of the Wakhan Valley. The Hindu Kush mountains in the background.
The main road through the Wakhan Valley, that Google map doesn’t know it exist. Left side of the rive is The Hindu Kush mountains in Afghanistan.

My travel buddies, the locals got a wine bottle for this road trip. It was around 11 am and we already started drinking wine.

Can’t get enough of this breathtaking landscape. The Hindu Kush mountain in the background.
To-Go cup for Café con leche. There is no need to teach locals about Recycle or Reuse; they don’t have enough resources, so it’s part of their life.
Love those Sunflowers, grown tall enough to get some Sunlight

Langar is a picturesque village in the upper part of the Wakhan Valley. The settlement is located at the junction of Pamir river (originates from the Pamir mountains in Tajikistan) and Wakhan Darya river (originates from the Hindu Kush mountain in Afghanistan) that forms the Panj River, which is a natural border between Afghanistan and Tajikistan. A smaller town of the same name is on other side of the river in Badakhshan province of Afghanistan.

Langar has a very fertile land with many trees. Beautiful view from my hostel.

All over Wakhan Valley, you will notice use of Non Cyrillic, pre Soviet alphabets, may be Persian not sure.

Next day, I said Good-Bye to the Wakhan Valley, crossed over from Wakhan-to-Pamir, arrived near Bulunkul on the Pamir Highway, and hitch-hiked back to Khorog, to complete the full circle.
