I visited Tashkent during my 3+ weeks backpacking trip across Uzbekistan. After wandering around in narrow mud-walled alleyways of the ancient town of Khiva (Itchan Kala) for last 4 days, I arrived in the capital city of Tashkent by an overnight train.
Tashkent, the capital city of Uzbekistan, was a major ancient city on the Silk Road, but now, it has a very Soviet city feeling that has little remaining from its ancient past. If you are interested in historical cities/towns, you will enjoy other silk road cities of Uzbekistan like Samarkand, Bukhara and Khiva.
Tashkent has a mixture of modern new office buildings, hotels, parks and crumbling Soviet style apartment blocks. I was not much impressed with the city. Photos below are from few sites around Tashkent.

Minor Mosque: one of the newly constructed mosque using white marble

Ensemble Hazrati Imam: a wonderful complex has the Madrasa of Barak-Khan, Tilla Sheikj mosque, and Mausoleum of St Abu Bakr Kaffal Shashi

A USSR style beer/alcoholic drinks dispensing shop. You decide on the drink and quantity, the shop will fill it up in a vacuum sealed plastic bottle.

Three days were more than enough for me in this big city and decided to decompress in Ferghana Valley. Once again, the train is the most comfortable way to travel in Uzbekistan.
