Hisor

Stories and Photos from my travel to an ancient silk road town with 2500+ years old history.

Destination 》Asia 》Central Asia 》Tajikistan 》Hisor

Year Visited: 2019 – August

I visited Hisor during my three plus weeks backpacking trip through Tajikistan. A well deserved rest for a day in Dushanbe, after spending 12 days in the Pamirs, I took a shared taxi to visit Hisor, a town with 2000+ years old history. Hisor was a major trading post on the ancient Silk Road trade route.

Some historical records point a fort in Hisor at the time, when Cyrus the Great founded the first Persian Empire, around 550 BC. Though, not much of the original fort is left as the place was destroyed countless times by every historical conqueror, including Cyrus, Alexander, Genghis, Timur and finally the Red Army. Most of the structures are renovated by the Tajik government, some part of the fort does look like it’s been recently built.

Photos below are of the Hisor fort.

The gate is believed to be 500+ years old, rest of the structure of the fort is heavily renovated.
The caravanserai from 1808, a place for Silk Road traders and their camels to safely spend the night.
The locals love the Hisor Fort, many newly-weds come here to take pictures.

Next day i took a shared taxi from Dushanbe to Khujand, a major trading post on the ancient Silk Road trade route.
