Nur-Sultan

Stories and Photos from my travel around the capital city of Kazakhstan.

Destination 》AsiaCentral AsiaKazakhstan 》Nur-Sultan

Year Visited: 2019 – July

Nur-Sultan was the first city I visited in Kazakhstan, I arrived here by flight from Ulaanbaatar after spending 14 days in Mongolia.

Formerly known as Astana, Nur-Sultan has been the capital city of Kazakhstan since December 1998. At the time of my visit, the city was still under construction. It truly is a modern city, with beautiful buildings designed by some of the most famous architects in the world, however, its quiet streets lack the same culture and traditions of other areas of Kazakhstan. If you don’t have a job or family in the city, I suggest only staying three to four days to fully explore the sights of the city.

Welcome to Astana (Nur-Sultan) A beautiful Floor Art at the Airport.
Hazrat Sultan Mosque, also known as Nur-Sultan Mosque, the largest mosque in Central Asia.
Baiterek Tower (‘Tree of Life’), symbolizing the legend of a golden egg on top of the tree of life, is the most recognizable monument of Nur-Sultan.
A gorgeous pedestrian bridge in the city.
Astana Opera, the Opera House of Nur-Sultan. The acoustics of this theater is considered one of the best in the world, designed by BioByte.
Zher-ana Monument: Tomiris, Queen of Saks, stands on a giant bull, with outstretched arms and guarded by two leopards with swords.
The Khan Shatyr, a shopping mall and entertainment center. It is the world’s largest tented construction.

After spending three days in the capital, I took a 29 hour-long bus ride, the longest I’ve ever taken, to Shymkent. I would recommend making a prior flight or train reservation, as summer is the peak travel season in Kazakhstan
